说明:Mr.L,to whom these paintings were dedicated (his name in Chinese was Lei Shiduo),was a French ambassador to Chongqing in 1940.These paintings he acquired of his visits to the contemporary galleries of the time as evidenced by the large number of his letters to his wife and which he wrote daily.Extracted from one of the letter dated 12 to 19 December 1946:“Yesterday,I visited an exhibition of paintings by the great contemporary Chinese masters:Xu Beihong,Fu Baoshi and Che Zhifo.I have known them through Fu at Tchong King and they received me very kindly.Naturally,I have let myself to be moved and Ihave bought two works…two and only very modest,which is very praiseworthy for I tried at least 10…”(中文翻译:这两幅画是‘L’先生(全名:雷士铎)的收藏,雷先生是1940年驻重庆的法国大使。这两幅画是他在当时的现代画廊中购买到的,这是可以在他每天写给他夫人的信中得到证实。从其中的一封信件(标注日期1946年12月12日-19日)中摘录道:昨天,我参观了几位当代中国大师的书画展览,有徐悲鸿,傅抱石,还有陈之佛。我是在重庆通过傅抱石认识的这两位画家,他们当时都很亲切的接待了我。很自然的,我在画廊就动了心,买了两件作品……这,已经算收敛了,我认为这是值得称赞的,因为我真的很想买下十件。)
徐悲鸿被誉为画马大师,一生画马无数,群马、奔马、双马、立马等都是他常作的形式。此幅《立马图》作于1945年,时年抗日战争结束,人民群众志气高涨。徐悲鸿以极其简劲浑厚的线条勾画出马的头部、颈部和躯干的轮廓,淋漓厚重,几笔就塑造出雄壮强实的肌肉。鬃尾则是大笔挥出,漂浮舞动,潇洒自然,真可谓“一洗万古凡马空”。徐悲鸿主张艺术家师法自然,但并不局限于形似,而是要神形兼备,喻象外之意,立马英姿飒爽、铿锵灵动的形象寄托了徐悲鸿积极乐观、豪爽正气的品格情操。
